ZIDLab
Training in physical - visual theatre and interdisciplinary
work within theatre
ZIDLab offers
unique training opportunities for performers, actors, dancers, directors,
choreographers* and students and others interested in development,
exploration and creation within the field of theatre and dance. The work
is based on Western and non-Western physical – visual theatre and
dance tradition, with a strong interdisciplinary approach. Within the
framework of a specific training of your choice, the basic principals
of the work of ZID Theater are always included: exploring and transcending
the borders between theatre, dance, music and visual - media art. The
authentic approach and creative capability of the participant are the
main goals of all the trainings.
2nd International Summer ZIDLab 2007 June 22 – 27
Title: Outside/Inside Spaces & Life Stories by Karolina Spaic, Sebo Bakker and guests
After a successful first edition of the Summer ZIDLab ‘06, we want to announce a second edition.
This edition will consist of 2 programs:
1. Outside/Inside spaces - Friday 22 – Sunday 25 June, from 10.30 – 15.30
2. Life stories - Monday 26 – Wednesday 27 June, from 10.30 -15.30
It is possible to follow each program separately, of both programs together.
In both programs we will focus on exploring interdisciplinary work within theatre and dance. The full-day program includes: physical and vocal training, improvisation, composition and the montage/composition of performers’ material.
1. Outside/Inside spaces
Exploration of possibilities to intertwine a work with public spaces and present it there.
The dynamic urban neighbourhood in Amsterdam where the theatre is situated will be our performance space. Original ideas that are theatrical, creative, moving, and inspiring and that bring us in touch with an accidental audience will be our field of work. We are looking to realize these ideas by using a variety of methods from theatre, performance art and actions. Specific qualities and possibilities of performance environments and interaction with an audience will be explored, where history, memory and imagination come together.
Sunday June 25 will be a presentation of the work at the festival in the neighbourhood.
2. Life stories
Why do life stories fascinate us? Which moments in life were of crucial importance and why? What are the power and the secret behind (auto)biographical material? How to transcend such specific material into the universal theatre/dance performance? This original material will be treated as a source for developing a piece.
Images, movement sequences, texts, songs and use of the surroundings will be part of the exploration.
We will study the (auto)biographical material contributed by participants in order to create original multidisciplinary work. Participants will be asked to bring something: a book, a story, private notes, images that they wish to explore.
Through various exercises and improvisations we will create original material in the field of theatre, dance and video art. Exploration of the interaction between different disciplines is an important aspect of the work.
Summer ZIDLab will end with a presentation before an invited audience.

ZID Theater produces cross-over theatre-dance with an international appeal, in a unique and recognizable style. Director Karolina Spaic and actor Sebo Bakker together constitute the artistic core of the company. ZidLab is the framework for a process of continuous reflection of, research into and sharing of our own techniques. ZID has acquired international acclaim with performances at venues and festivals in Belgium, Denmark, Great Britain, Colombia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Russia and the United States.
As of 2004 ZID Theater has expanded its activities by establishing its own workplace in Amsterdam. ZID/Workplace promotes the development of international, physical-visual and multimedia theatre and dance by initiating projects and by collaborating with theatre/dance people abroad.
Artistic director and director
Karolina Spaic, after training in classical ballet and a study in literature, graduated from the International Theatre Department at the Arts Academy (HKU) in Utrecht in 1988. From 1995-2005, she took a part in a specialization course in theatre anthropology at the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) under Eugenio Barba. For this she received scholarships from T.I.N. (Dutch Theatre Institute) and the Dutch Performance Arts Fund. Theatre anthropology explores both non-western and western styles of physical theatre and dance styles. She is an internationally published writer on theatre and several of her articles have been included in books on the subject. Almost all performances by ZID Theater are based on concepts developed by her, and are also directed by her. . In her work she combines elements from a variety of disciplines: physical theatre/dance, performance art and media. She gives trainings and workshops in physical and multimedia theatre/dance to actors and dancers in the Netherlands and abroad. During the summer of 2005 she was a guest teacher at the international festival Magdalena ’05 in Providence, USA and in October 2006, together with Sebo Bakker, she was a guest of theatre 7 Stages in Atlanta, USA.
Artistic co-director and actor
Sebo Bakker has studied mime in Amsterdam and at the Sonia Moore Theatre School in New York. He joined ZID Theater in 1992, participating in all of the group’s performances since then. His solo performance Vincent & I, based on a text by Jan Fabre and directed by Karolina Spaic is still performed internationally, lately in October 2006 at 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta, USA. Besides being in ZID Theater he appeared in several productions and films, including the international production Universal Copyrights 1 and 9 by Jan Fabre (Paris, Vienna, New York, 1995-1997) and Invisitors Vista by Japanese choreographer Kenzo Kusuda. Sebo Bakker attended several master classes in physical acting. He was one of the few actors to receive a grant from the Dutch Performance Arts Foundation to attend Yoshi Oida’s workshop. He regularly leads trainings and workshops in physical theatre/dance for professionals, young people and children, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
